XRn: Lung Assessment

ABOUT

This VR game, XRn: Lung Assessment, created for the Oculus Rift was designed for first-year nursing students to learn how to perform a lung auscultation. The player is guided through the steps by the preceptor, Nurse Opal, who verbally explains and demonstrates how to properly auscultate a patient’s chest. In this virtual world, the player is given X-ray glasses to see the relevant anatomy beneath the skin and glowing guides to recognize where to place the stethoscope. Using a wireless stethoscope, the player is able to listen to the patient’s lungs as they breathe. This scene is a tutorial on how to use the different tools and understand where the lungs should be auscultated. In a future iteration of this project, there will be multiple patient rooms where the player will learn how to identify abnormal lung sounds.

MY ROLE

As the lead programmer for this game, I was responsible for coding the functionality and interaction of the project. In Unity, I integrated the 2D and 3D assets that my team members created, chose materials that fit within the style guide, and programmed the interactions that fit within the learning goals. Additionally, I produced the animations for the scene and modeled the stethoscope.

Virtual BVIS

ABOUT

This is a mini VR experience of the UIC BVIS building including the student lounge, computer lab, and classroom. In the lounge, the user is able to pick up certain objects like the coffee pot or cup. There are also whiteboards in the different rooms that the user can draw on with a marker. Because of the pandemic, all of the BVIS students have been working from home. I created this nostalgic experience to allow my classmates to visit the BVIS building from anywhere in the world.
